Prof. Dr. Volker Grabowsky

is since October 2009 Professor of Thai Language and Culture
(Thai Studies) at the Asia-Africa-Institute of the University of Hamburg. He is also head of the institute's Southeast Asia Department. Previously he was Professor of Southeast Asian History at the Institute of Ethnology, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Müster.

He is specialised in the history and culture of Tai peoples in mainland Southeast Asia and Southwest China.

From September 1996 until August 1999 he worked as a visiting lecturer of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) at the Department of Lao Language and Literature, National University of Laos (NUOL) in Vientiane.

In collaboration with Assoc. Prof. Renoo Wichasin (Chiang Mai University) he published the monograph "Chronicles of Chiang Khaeng: A Tai Lü Prinicpality at the Upper Mekong" (Honolulu 2008). See

This work contains a lengthy introduction into the history and historiography of the region as well as annotated translations and transcriptions (into modern Thai) of four Tai Lü chronicles from Müang Sing (Laos).
