Many myanmar buddhists do not fear the toils of the pilgrimage to the Golden Rock to make merit. As a stranger you should not be under stress, you should have time and be in calmness. In the evening the mood of prayers and meditation will be unforgettable for you. Even if you do not understand what there happens you will feel it! Men are allowed to touch the Rock and to gild it with gold leaves. Women have to stay in distance. |

If you are lucky, you may take part in the teaching of the novices the next morning. |

Five or six groups of novices sit
in a large room and learn the lines of pali. In each group
one of the novices (in the right picture the one that
has his hands up and looks to the monk)
recites by heart and yells into a microfone.
